Known for her elegant design and expertise in capturing the essence of dramatic, natural lighting, internationally acclaimed photographer, Kathleen Norris Cook's images have been consistently published in Europe, Japan, and the US. Along with national advertising work, her credits include participation in various Sierra Club publications, Eastman Kodak calendars and books, and such magazines as Popular Photography, Outdoor Photographer, View Camera, American Photo, and National Geographic. She has completed four books; the most recent, Spirit of the San Juans, a large format book showcasing her vision of the San Juan Mountains of SW Colorado; Yosemite, Valley of Thunder; Exploring Mountain Highways; and The Million Dollar Highway, a book dealing with the area between Ouray and Durango, CO. She has also produced a 45 minute documentary film based on the book of the same name, Spirit of the San Juans. Although her success warrants extensive traveling, her home base is Ouray, CO and the majestic San Juan Mountains. Kathleen can be contacted through her web site (see link above)

July 10, 2009 The "go" date is the date at which WCA determines whether there are enough students or not to run the class. If this is a class you are interested in, please be sure to enroll before the "Go" date (and encourage your friends to do so as well) so that we can be sure to run the class! We will notify you at the end of the business day on the "GO" date if the class is to be cancelled so that you can make other plans for that date, but ideally, we'll see you at the class!

| Course Description |
Capture Breathtaking Wildflowers in the Spectacular San Juan Mountains
Class Description: _You will be working in various lighting and weather conditions from early morning to mid afternoon. Emphasis on composition, learning how to use available light to maximize the quality of your imagery and for those of you who are working with Photoshop, how to shoot in the field to better utilize the computer for your finished work. Friday evening you will meet your classmates and be able to show a small portfolio (6 imagaes) of your work. During this time, everyone will be able to participate in a discussion and critiquing session. Kathleen will also present a brief slide show of her work. This will also be an opportunity to discuss techniques and set the schedule for the first morning in the field. On Saturday, Kathleen and the class will be in the field from early morning to late afternoon with a midday break for lunch and personal time. You may choose to join her for the whole day or part of the day. Expect a long, intense day. On Sunday, the class will go out during the morning and return mid morning for editing time and critiquing of all students work. During this time, Kathleen will work with those of you who wish to learn some basic Photoshop techniques. Lunch will also take place during your editing time. The workshop will end by 4:00 p.m. that afternoon. If you are using a digital camera, please bring your laptop with you in order to view your work._Tripods are essential for working in the field. If you wish to shoot film, please let us know in advance so that we may make arrangements for processing the film which was shot on Saturday so that we may view the images during the editing and critiquing process on Sunday.__Students are responsible for all film and processing costs. | Notes | If you are using a digital camera, please bring your laptop with you in order to view your work. Kathleen asks that SLR users bring E-6 transparency film. Tripods are essential. Students are responsible for any film and processing costs; special arrangements will be made for processing on Friday.

E-6 Film (if you are using a film camera) -- 8 rolls
Good, rugged shoes or hiking boots
Layered clothing for all kinds of weather -- come prepared for cool mornings and evenings with a chance of working in the snow and/or rain showers.
OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT:
A close-up lense/lenses for your camera
A portable reflecting mylar disk (or any translucent material) -- recommended size is 15-18". These reflectors are collapsible and easy to carry with your gear.
