Workshop on Painting with Hot Wax (Encaustics) to Be Offered in Ouray on February 25 & 26th
Artist and teacher Dianna Fritzler has been creating with encaustics for the past seven years and has grown very fond of her relationship with hot wax! Her popular encaustic workshops are filled with exploration, enthusiasm, excitement, and fun. She has won national awards for her work and currently shows in galleries in Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico and on February 25th and 26th, she will be teaching a class on Encaustics (painting with hot wax) in Ouray through Weehawken Creative Arts.
During this two day workshop, students will learn: what in the heck encaustic painting is; precautions for healthy encaustic painting; what materials you need to get started; step-by-step procedures to make great encaustic paintings; several various techniques including layering, stenciling, relief painting, monoprints, and more. Perhaps the greatest treat of the workshop will be that students will walk away with at least two finished paintings by the end of the experience. Absolutely no art experience is necessary to take this workshop – you don’t even know how to draw a line!
The artist and instructor, Dianna Fritzler grew up in Wyoming which gave her a strong sense of space and a deep appreciation of shape that propelled her journey into art. The wide-open spaces broken only by an occasional cluster of trees, cows, or ranch buildings, provided her with a deep appreciation for simplicity and composition. Always fascinated by shape and composition, Fritzler discovered the wonder of black and white photography.
At age 25, with her camera, backpack and her best friend, Fritzler took a hiatus that changed every aspect of her life. She backpacked around the world for a year, stopping at every art venue available. Fritzler was smitten with fine art and knew it would be a life-long love affair. Upon returning from her travels, Fritzler opened an advertising/PR firm with two colleagues in Denver, CO, got married and started a family. After several years her husband was transferred to the western slope of Colorado and Dianna continued her artistic journey in Grand Junction, taking up oil painting.
In speaking of her art, she says, “I am fascinated by nature; from snowy peaks to lusty eggplants. I celebrate it all through my work. Painting is the nucleus of serenity for me. When I paint, I retreat into the profound journey of living in the moment with complete awareness, acceptance and joy. My ultimate goal is to share that with others.”
Encaustics (painting with hot wax) is also a favorite medium for Fritzler. Tapping into her moods and inner images and thoughts, contemporary abstracts flow with the movement of the warm wax. ”It’s a great exercise in surrender for me,” says Fritzler. “I literally have to go with the flow when I paint with wax.” Her newest encaustics can be seen at Schilling Gallery in Telluride, CO or at her home studio and gallery, Twisted Brick Studios, in Palisade.
“Encaustics 101” will be offered on the 25th and 26th from 9 am until 4 pm each day at Weehawken Ouray. The workshop is for students with any level of experience, ages 18 and up. The workshop will be held at Weehawken Ouray in beautiful Ouray, Colorado through Weehawken Creative Arts. The fee for this two-day workshop (which includes materials) will be $235 for Weehawken Members and $250 for Non-Members. To register, visit www.weehawkenarts.org or call Weehawken at 970.318.0150.
